This blog post’s tips come to you from Boris Remes, a highly successful former international student. Boris is a friend of Devant who has written a best-seller, Start Right: Success Habits for International Students.
We caught up with him to talk about this new book and to ask for his advice for International Students like you. Here’s what he had to say…
People are always asking for advice on what it takes to be a successful international student, particularly in the areas of academics, scholarships, and jobs. I often provide advice to parents, students, and institutions. After 15 exciting years and the many ups and downs of my own journey, I felt a moral obligation to share with others and the book as a means to gather my perspectives and share with fellow international students and recent graduates.
It’s, of course, difficult to bring it down to just three bits of advice, however, I would say the following three matter most:
Be confident in your abilities – every international student has decided to take a very important journey. It can and likely will be transformative, but it is not for everyone and there will be challenges and many ups and downs. Explore what your assets are – including your experience moving and adapting to new situations: List them and understand them in order to build confidence. People may believe confidence is innate, but it is manufactured and nurtured.
Think about what you want. Make the time to build an understanding of where you are presently and where you want to be a year from now. Visualize the results, make them realistic, and most of all, make them yours. Then, you can think about what capabilities and tools you need to achieve those goals.
Keep your goals at the forefront of your life. It is easy to be distracted or to follow advice that can cause you to lose focus. You may need to adjust your goals, but if you keep your focus, you will be more likely to achieve them.’
We find it especially helpful for International Students to build a set of resources and a professional network when embarking on this journey. A great place to start is to check out our events page for timely discussions with industry professionals and peers.
